Styled like a boombox, the Magnasonic MAG-MDVD500 is a complete entertainment hub that doubles as a portable DVD player thanks to the centrally located large 7 inch display. My nephew was particularly interested in this model as he wanted this for the upcoming Christmas for its portability and teen-friendly design. It works off 8 alkaline C cells and can also draw power from an AC outlet. Replete with an IR remote, it provides all the controls necessary to play CDs, DVDs and karaoke CDs. You can also stream from USB, SDHC or SD cards and even display pictures, play MPEG4, MP3 and WAV files directly from your iPod or using the auxiliary input that lets you convert it into an actual boombox. The AM/FM tuner even lets you convert it into a radio and with the RCA out, you can stream the picture live onto a large screen. A bit lacking on the microphone input controls though, it doesn’t actually help in fine tuning the karaoke experience.
Probably the best thing about the Magnasonic MAG-MDVD500 is the array of features it boasts. Radio, normal video and audio playback including live streaming from an auxiliary cable, iPod, USB 2.0 and MMC card will let you basically convert this karaoke machine into a mobile entertainment hub and the volume controls aren’t bad either. The 7 inch TFT LCD screen is a bit too bright but it is vivid for watching movies as long as they are in high quality. Moving on, the microphone is of a decent quality and you won’t get any disturbances during karaoke performances. But the biggest advantage of this Magnasonic karaoke machine is its ability to work off AC power and battery too, just don’t expect a long playing time.
Considering its lightweight nature, size and plethora of features, the Magnasonic MAG-MDVD500 is a portable karaoke player designed for those always trotting along from place to place. It even reminds me of those 90s boom boxes that we used to carry around to school.
Additional Buyer’s Information:
It doesn’t accept dual microphone connections but you can overcome this issue by using a Y connector. Naturally, the volume control will work on both the mics so duets are a bit limited with the Magnasonic MAG-MDVD500. Another thing you ought to be aware of with this karaoke is that it has underpowered amplifiers so even if you connect it with a set of speakers, expect a bit of distortion in sound quality and in the event of any damage or complications, use UPS or any trustable courier service to send it back to the manufacturer’s address given in the instruction manual for repairs.

To be honest, I had already read through a few really negative reviews on the Magnasonic MAG-MDVD500 about its durability. Many users experienced a blank screen soon after purchasing the unit and others had a total breakdown of the machine. Unfortunately, the warranty isn’t dependable and you probably will have to send it in for repairs at your own expense of shipping to avail warranty as the service center is based out of Canada, unless of course you are within the country.
As for my personal experience, I haven’t yet faced any issues although the screen did mysteriously go blank when I was moving it around a bit. Later the manual revealed that there was a hidden switch to turn the display off, which I had accidentally triggered.
It is quite versatile in playing karaoke songs and DVD or movies from a USB drive, MMC and even directly from an iPod or music player but don’t expect a lot of clarity in terms of audio as the speakers are a bit under powered and tend to blend together bass and treble, with the lack of separate controls for both. It also lacks individual microphone controls such as tone modeling and equalizers so the karaoke experience will be a bit limited but it is great for kids, teens and camping trips considering its battery power option.
For those who want more than a portable karaoke solution, the Magnasonic MAG-MDVD500 is a perfect fit with its ability to play video, audio, radio and karaoke. From the first time you use this device, it becomes evident just how potentially versatile it is. A complete compact entertainment center, this karaoke machine is great for the road, camping trips or just to carry along wherever you go with its battery support and large 7 inch TFT screen.
